Here, Sportsmail takes a closer look at the nine qualifying groups.

Reality has started to hit home for the Brazil 2014 anisers this week. First Fifa undertook its latest inspection of the country’s preparations amid ongoing concerns over delays in stadiums and infrastructure projects; and on Friday the first round of qualifying matches takes place for the European nations.

Brazil has just under two years to put all of the nuts and bolts together quite literally to host a tournament that will spread across 12 cities stretching up to 2,000 miles apart, with such grand changes in climate and culture that will make World Cup 2014 feel as though its being hosted across a whole continent.

The Brazilian government has invested around $14 billion towards the infrastructure surrounding the World Cup, not including the stadia, as the country looks to use the greatest sporting events on earth Rio de Janeiro will also host the Olympics in 2016 to boost its developing economy.

Fifa has been concerned about Brazil 2014, worried that transport infrastructure and even stadia might not be ready for the start of the tournament in two years’ time. Or at least world football’s governing body was worried, until the appointment of Luis Fernandes, Brazil’s executive secretary of the ministry of sport, to the local anising committee.

Fernandes, who spent time in London during the Olympics, admits that there have previously been concerns that Brazil’s plans are behind schedule, but says everything is now on track for a tournament he believes can be the catalyst for huge economic development.

“I would say we are on schedule,” Fernandes tells Goal. “It is very complex works that have to be done so it’s not a simple task to co ordinate. Of course, some aspects go ahead of schedule, some are a little bit behind but in general, we are on track.

FIFA Updates About India

India eye FIFA World Cup as ranking hits new low

NEW DELHI: On the day India hit their lowest ever FIFA ranking, the country's soccer chief said he was eyeing a place at their first World Cup finals in Qatar 2022.

The country of 1.2 billion people dropped one place to 169th in the latest FIFA rankings released on Wednesday, behind Aruba, Nepal and Maldives.

pp Blatter, the head of the world soccer's governing body, has called India a 'sleeping giant' but the country obsessed with all things cricket continues to slide into soccer mediocrity.

Indian soccer heads, though, believe there is cause for optimism. "We have undertaken a 10-year development program. We are hopeful of qualifying for the World Cup by 2022," the All India Football Federation president Praful Patel told reporters on Wednesday.

"India should be one of the teams to play in Qatar. FIFA has gone out of its way to see that India emerges as a strong footballing nation."

After a bye, India were beaten 5-2 on aggregate by United Arab Emirates in the second round of Asian qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil last year.

FIFA News Brazil

Embassy to monitor Brazil ahead of World Cup

The South African embassy in Brazil is preparing to host visitors from the country during the 2014 Fifa World Cup in the hope that the national team qualifies for the tournament.

Mphakama Mbete, the SA embassador to the South American nation, who hosted Bafana Bafana at a dinner in Sao Paulo on Wednesday night, said they need potential visitors to let the consulate know what they need in advance.

"We want to have a sense of what the football community in South Africa wants when they come here in 2014," Mbete said.

"Early next year we want to begin distributing information on accommodation, tourism and public transport on the major cities where the matches will be held.

"We will also monitor next year's Confederation Cup so we can anticipate people's various needs."

Mbete wished Bafana well ahead of a friendly international against five-time world champions Brazil in Sao Paulo on Friday.

"I dont remember us beating Brazil in the recent past, but I believe you can do it," he told the players.

"The Brazilians I speak to believe their current team is not up to scratch and you boys will do us proud."

South Africa have never beaten Brazil's senior national team. Having drawn their first two 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia and Botswana, Bafana will need to be on form in their last four games if they hope to book their place at the global showpiece.

Argentina are riding high on confidence after win over Brazil (4-3) and Germany (3-1) in their last two international friendlies.

For Paraguay, the match will be a fresh start under new coach Gerardo Pelusso of Uruguay. Paraguay's 1-3 loss to Argentina in the home leg led to the dismissal of coach Francisco Arce.

Both Argentina and Paraguay were quarterfinalists in the last edition of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

FIFA News About Messi

Messi expects rough qualifying ride

Lionel Messi is wary of the threat posed by Paraguay as Argentina bid to extend their five-match winning streak in tomorrow night's FIFA World Cup™ qualifier. The Albiceleste's run of victories has taken in qualifiers against Ecuador and Colombia, lifting them to third place in the group. They lie a point behind Uruguay, who take on Colombia tomorrow, and two behind leaders Chile, who are not in action. "Paraguay will be very difficult opponents but we must get the job done at home," Messi warned. Goalkeeper Sergio Romero agreed: "Paraguay maybe are the most difficult adversaries we had in the past: we lost the last two matches we played in Asuncion and had to battle hard to rescue a draw at home."

"Paraguay will be very difficult opponents but we must get the job done at home. Lionel Messi"

Head coach Alejandro Sabella has had to deal with injuries in the build-up to the game, with Manchester City star Sergio Aguero and Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini both unavailable for both tomorrow's match and Tuesday's clash with Peru. Aguero's City team-mate Pablo Zabaleta is also doubtful with a hamstring strain, with Napoli's Hugo Campagnaro on standby to replace him. Leandro Desabato of Estudiantes La Plata will replace Coloccini while Aguero's absence creates a vacancy for Paris St Germain's Ezequiel Lavezzi in attack. Messi said: "Despite the changes, the group is always as strong and that's a good thing." Paraguay have yet to win away from home during the qualifying campaign, but midfielder Victor Ayala believes if they can keep Barcelona star Messi under wraps, they can spring a surprise in Cordoba. The Lanus player said: "Without Messi, Argentina is not much better than us. If we can control him our chances will surely improve." A defensive visiting line-up will look to Malaga new boy Roque Santa Cruz and Cerro Porteno's Jonathan Fabbro for goals. It will be a particularly noteworthy occasion for the latter, with the 30-year-old making his competitive international debut against the country of his birth.

15 Nations Fall: The Crests Of Euro 2012

This is way late to the party, what with Euro 2012 being over near two months and all, but better late than never and all that nonsense. Some wonderful illustrations from “Lee” on the inevitability of any major
tournament, compiled into one poster. A few examples of the individual countries tumbling can be seen down

Illustrator Lee documents Euro 2012 with excellent graphic project 15 Nations Fall Posted by Rob Alderson, Tuesday 19 June 2012 The best thing football provides is melodrama, an excuse in an increasingly cynical and coolly unimpressed world to revel in glory, failure, trump and disaster. It’s why the highlight of any major tournament is the England-knocked-out-montage a collection of heart rending clips set to something mournful by a band like Embrace. Illustrator Lee has certainly got into the spriti of things with his evolving project “15 Nations Fall” which documents the destructions of different nations’ crests as they are eliminated from Euro 2012. But this is much more than just a clever idea with some lovely illustrative touches on display – I particularly like the fallen Russian eagle and the Swedish badge which looks like it’s been roughed up. Scroll down to see the before and after images of the crests and, if you’re English, keep your fingers crossed that our sad three lions stay off the site for a few more days.

FIFA looking to the future with India

FIFA and the Indian Football Association (AIFF) signed a protocol agreement on 5 September 2012 in New Delhi, officialising the cooperation between the two bodies regarding the development of football on the sub-continent. It also gave world football's governing body and the Indian FA the chance to re-evaluate how best to work together. The protocol agreement (which is set to run until 2014) was signed on 5 September 2012 by FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke and by Praful Patel, President of the AIFF. It sets out how FIFA and the Indian FA should work together towards the development of football. "The agreement covers management strategy, technical development and the strengthening of clubs and the championship," Valcke explained. Patel also went on to outline the AIFF's 10-year development plan focussing on youth football, which has been named "Lakshya" which means "aim". One of these aims is to help the Indian team to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ , with the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017 – which the country is a candidate to host – being a milestone along the way. "We will present an official application and then it will be up to the FIFA Executive Committee to decide. We have a solid case and a real commitment to the development of football in our country, which should put us among the stronger candidates," Patel said. "The PERFORMANCE FIFA programme has already helped us streamline our organisation and complete our technical, educational, grassroots and coach-training activities, which is something that we really needed to do," Kushal Das, Secretary General of the AIFF, told FIFA.com. "With FIFA's help, we're implementing a complete development structure, and if we're chosen to host the FIFA U-17 World Cup, that will definitely be a real help as well." FIFA, the Indian FA and the country's national authorities have already been working closely together for some time, with various programmes and activities having been set up and implemented. Just a few weeks ago, Minister for Sports Ajay Maken announced the opening of sporting infrastructures for the public to give young people easier access to playing sport after school. This may seem like a simple measure but it is a crucial one in terms of encouraging Indian youngsters to play football. Valcke also highlighted other investments, saying, "The Win in India with India programme, in which some $8m USD has been invested, has already seen four artificial pitches built in Mumbai, Shillong, Imphal and Bangalore. Two others will be opened this month in Goa and Kolkata, with another two still to come".

FIFA News

2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers (UEFA) Fifty-three nations belonging to UEFA begin their quest to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil this weekend in what promises to be a fascinating international break, with most teams playing two matches that could make or break their qualification hopes. Thirteen teams from UEFA will qualify for this World Cup, meaning that once again Europe will be the best represented continent at a World Cup.

In terms of betting propositions the first round of fixtures (on Friday and Saturday) looks pretty reasonable in terms of value options. Scotland begin their qualification on Saturday at home to Serbia and given their excellent performance against Australia last time out and their typically good home form in qualifying campaigns they look good value to begin their campaign with a win.

There are always a few upsets, especially early on in an qualification campaign and while it is impossible to see Germany losing at home to Faroe Islands on Friday night the same can't be said of France's trip to Helsinki to take on a Finland side that invariably ups their game against big teams. The Finns have taken points off Germany in recent qualifiers as well as providing Netherlands and Sweden with stern tests in Euro 2012 qualifiers. While there are always going to be upsets when such a large number of international matches are on, picking them out is very difficult.

Plenty of matches offer the punter some value so as well as giving rationale on my Finland v France and Scotland v Serbia bets I'll post a small selection of slightly more speculative bets that look good value.

Finland v France

France begin their campaign with what, on paper, looks a relatively easy tie away to Group I minnows Finland. They will be desperate to erase any lingering memories of Euro 2012, where they underperformed terribly when expected to go far. They were knocked out with barely a wimper in the quarter-finals and a disappointing Group display where they scraped through by the skin of their teeth.

Finland have never qualified for a major competition but have always been tough opponents in qualification. While they may not challenge Spain or France in the group, they do have enough quality in their squad with players like Schalke forward Teemu Pukki and Ajax defender Niklas Moisander to give both those sides a scare when they come to visit. At best odds of 6/1 to win this match they could well be value but it's definitely worth taking a look at the Asian Handicap betting to find a bet that gives us some value as well as a safety net.

I feel the match is going to be closer than the match odds suggest so I would not be averse to backing Finland at 6/1 or the draw at 3/1, but I believe a small headstart to Finland will mean a lot. France do have a far superior side on paper but the Finns are no pushovers and have a decent enough record against bigger countries in qualifying campaigns to come into this match with confidence that they won't be on the end of a hammering.

It looks worth taking a risk on Finland with a three-quarter goal headstart at 6/5 with Paddy Power as we'll get half our stake back if they lose by a single goal and have a good chance of making a decent profit if they can manage a draw (as they did home and away against Germany during World Cup 2010 qualifying). While it's easy to see a France victory, I can't see them winning by more than one goal so it's also worth taking a small risk on the draw.
Bet 1 point on Finland +0.75 at 6/5 with Paddy Power.
Bet 0.5 points on the draw at 3/1 with bet365.

Scotland v Serbia
As a Scot it is hard to find any reasons to back Scotland in a competitive match, especially with the memory of scraping a home win against Liechtenstein still relatively fresh in the memory. In spite of this I'm backing them to come out of their opening qualifier against Serbia with all three points. They look great value at 17/10 against a supposedly superior opposition in Sinisa Mihaljovic's side.

Scotland typically perform best when they are at Hampden against a team that is better than them on paper, look at their performances in defeat to Spain in the last qualifying campaign and that is when Craig Levein got the best out of his side. Serbia are clearly no Spain so Scotland have a chance to show what they can do with legitimate belief that they can win the match. In players like Allan MacGregor, Graham Dorrans, James Morrison and Steven Naismith there is plenty of quality in the Scotland squad that perhaps they don't get enough credit for.

Hampden is always a tough place to visit and while Serbia have plenty of experienced internationals, nothing can prepare a visiting player for the atmosphere at Hampden Park. Serbia's best chance of taking something from the match will be to silence the crowd early on by taking the match by the scruff of the neck. They do have the players capable of keeping Scotland quiet, but I am quietly confident that Serbia will find the pressure too much. At best odds of 2/1 to win I wouldn't stop anyone backing them but they should be longer. Young striker Miralem Sulejmani looks their biggest threat and could cause Scotland's relatively threadbare defence some problems.
It's definitely worth taking a risk on Scotland winning this match, and I will continue to back them at home throughout the campaign.
Bet 2 points on Scotland at 17/10 with BetVictor.
